Discover more from Things We Don't Talk About Like Politics & Religion
Today represents one year since I started publishing articles here on substack. I have loved writing for this audience of subscribers. So far I have published 105 articles on this newsletter.
I try to get one or two out per week. Sometimes I do more and sometimes less. But I try to keep up the pace. It seems there is always something to write about that either piques my interest or is of interest to everyone.
I’ve written on a pretty broad array of topics from Christian Nationalism to Iowa politics, national politics, kittens, bicycling, Black history, religion, and lots of other topics that we don’t usually talk about…except here. I hope you have enjoyed my articles.

I started this project to coincide with my retirement from a 45 year career in education. I retired in August 2022. I published two books last year also, and have been trying to make my writing a supplemental income.
This newsletter is a free subscription and I am committed to keeping it that way, but… I have a big favor to ask.
Please consider becoming a paid subscriber to this newsletter. For $5 a month, you’ll get continued posts and articles from me, but also access to the archive of material that a free subscription doesn’t have.
There is no obligation to become a paid subscriber. I’ll continue this newsletter as a free subscription regardless. I just wanted to make this appeal to you so that you can have the opportunity to help me out and become a partner with me in this effort.
Your financial support for my writing would mean so much to me.
A second way to help me out is to recommend my newsletter to a friend who you think will find value in my articles. They can join for free of course, or as a paid subscriber.
In addition to continuing to provide you with solid and interesting writing on this newsletter, I am also working on two more books that will be published within the coming year.
One book is called “Antiracism as a Spiritual Practice: (For White People)” This book will contain stories of both my personal journey toward antiracism but practical help and guidance on how and why becoming antiracist is so important, especially for white people.
Another project I’m working on is a history of a not-so-well known Vaudeville team. The book will be called “From the Iowa Coal Mines to the Palace Theater: The Vaudeville Career of the Pearson Brothers.” You probably didn’t know that Iowa had coal mines, much less a successful Vaudeville team. This will be a fun story and highlights an era of American history that is as interesting as it is entertaining.
So as you can see I am quite busy in my retirement. I am doing speaking engagements and book events as well. I love this “new career” and I hope you’ll help me continue down this literary journey.
Again, I appreciate your subscription, and will do my best to continue to provide you with quality writing that you can appreciate.
Best Wishes to All,
Dan
